Trying to claim back tricky things like mileage, clothing, laundry or dry-cleaning expenses? Here are the kinds of documents you'll need if you want your claim to be successful.



Work-related car expense (cents per KM method)


Q: Do I need a logbook?

A: You do not need a logbook for this type of method. However, it is imperative to note that you must be able to substantiate how you worked out your business kilometres per car.


Q: What other documents will be required?

A: Other documents may be required include:

  1. Purchase or lease documents of your car

  2. Copies of the car registration

  3. Details of business travel that includes the purpose, frequency and number of kms travelled for work related purposes.

TIP:

The following are common issues encountered with the ATO with cents per kilometre claims:

• Claiming 5,000km without being able to show how you had travelled 5,000km

• Claiming more than 5,000km for a single vehicle in a single year

• Claiming for a car that you do not own


Work-related travel expenses

You will need original receipts for these type of claims.


Work-related clothing, laundry and dry-cleaning expenses

To be able to claim the cost of work uniform:

  1. It must be distinct (e.g. employers logo permanently attached to it)

  2. You must also provide written evidence
